Cashmere is a fibre from the wool or fur of the Kashmir goat. It is expensive because only a few ounces are obtained from each goat per year. It is a delicate yarn, more fragile than wool. It is also extraordinarily soft, resilient, and receptive to dyes. Cashmere clothing is made from the finest 100% pure Mongolian cashmere yarn.

Cashmere wool is the downy undercoat that grows from midsummer to winter. Long guard hair protects the cashmere undercoat from the elements, and is removed in spring by shearing or gradually combing the hair to remove the down. Mongolia’s climate and geography is suited for herding cashmere goats, who thrive in the harsh mountainous climates and produce the highest quality wool. In moderate climates, the goats lose the ability to grow the downy coats that
produce quality cashmere for garments.

The fineness of cashmere can be measured from its cost. The finer the cashmere, the more expensive it becomes, and the variations in the fineness of the cashmere depend on its origins. Cashmere fibre is also priced by its length and longer fibres make stronger yarn that pill less. A top quality fibre will require less dye, and so remain soft even in dark colours. Of all these variables of pure cashmere, usually you get what you pay for.

So, it becomes really important to take good care of cashmere. If properly cared and washed for, cashmere shawls keep their shape and last for many years. As cashmere cloth is so highly priced because of its softness its essential to retaining the softness of the cloth. Hand-washing a cashmere knit will actually make it softer over time. Only woven cashmere garments should be dry-cleaned so as not to lose their shape.

Some tips to keep pure cashmere look clean and beautiful are firstly allow the delay of 2-3 days in between wearing the cashmere. So avoid wearing the cashmere shawls on frequent intervals. Wash different coloured garments separately and do not use bleach. Do not twist or wring your cashmere and squeeze the garment gently.

Use your shampoo, or a baby shampoo, or a mild detergent like Woolite. Be sure to dissolve this thoroughly in lukewarm water before putting in the sweater. Use a hair conditioner in the rinsing water to make the cashmere even softer and keep its loft. The finest and longest fibres of this rare and precious cashmere are combed once a year from the bellies and throats of the Kashmir goats during the molting season.

A cashmere jumper is by far the softest, lightest and warmest item in any wardrobe, and when properly cared for, will last for very many years. These longer fibres are especially soft and cause less “pilling” when knitted into garments such as cashmere jumpers, cashmere sweaters, cashmere cardigans, cashmere ponchos, cashmere scarves and cashmere shawls.
