INDIAN SHAWLS

Silk Shawls are worn on very formal occasions, particularly in the evenings. In India, these scarf like silk shawls are popular with both men and women. Silk shawls have acquired some kind of celebrity status in India. Artists and actors would generally attend parties, wearing elegant silk kurta and churidar, with silk shawls hanging from their shoulders. Often eminent politicians and ministers would gift silk shawls to each other not only to show respect, but also to communicate that they are allies.

These pure silk shawls are created by the hereditary weavers of INDIA. The tools used are very basic in nature- wooden blocks for marking designs on silk. A typical INDIAN shawl is a piece of textile, often long and narrow, usually worn on or near the head, for warmth, fashion, cleanliness, or religious purposes. In drier, dustier climates, or in environments where there is a lot of airborne contaminants, a thin shawl is often worn over the head to keep the hair clean. Over time, this custom has evolved into a fashionable item in many cultures, particularly among women

Our shawl wrap is just the thing for breezy days or chilly evenings. Soft cabled wrap can be worn with the buttons down the front or at the shoulder. Shawl wrap in black, rosemary, off-white, camel, rosewood. One size, length of shawl wrap unbuttoned is 200" x 70"W. 100% pure cashmere..

Embroidered Wrap and Shawl stole in coarse wool fabric with vibrant embroidery work. It is wonderfully rustic and primevally appealing. They make perfect evening shawls. Does not have the kind of comfort that you would experience in pashmina or silk, but it is warm. And above all embroidery is unique and that makes these Indian Wrap and Shawl rare, exotic and provocative.

India has managed admirably to preserve the culture of both its court and nomadic peoples. The special Wrap and Shawls of this region with embroidery are very famous because of their bright look that complements a winter day. The embroidery is never very dense but the colors are combined in such a manner that the brightness of body colors of the shawls is always enhanced. The patterns of any embroidery are first sketched in mud with needles and then a final sketching is done in double running stitch. Embroidery, besides being an art, is an expression of culture for these people. In marriage, the embroidery that a girl brings with her has a very important part to play in forming an opinion about her father's status. There are various embroidery types used here. The most rich and difficult is the paako stitch. This is a tight square chain and double buttonhole embroidery often with a black slanted stitch outlining.

Evening Shawls in pure wool with designs of antique paisley are very popular in India, just in the way silk shawls are popular in the west. It may be for the simple reason that they go very well with some Indian dresses like saree and salwar kameez. It may also be because these shawls in earthy shades like maroon, green and sand are preferred colors of many Indians. In recent times Jamawar shawls have been very popular also in the west, gradually replacing silk pashmina.

For its price, a jamawar shawl is very elegant and comfortable too. Designs have been borrowed from famous paisley shawls. These shawls are meant for every day wear, both casual and formal.

Kashmir embroidery Evening Shawl have unique charm. Floral patterns in multi color are embroidered on solid color wool fabric. This makes the shawls very colorful, yet never too loud. Thus aesthetically, these are perhaps the finest looking shawls made in India. Women of all ages, young and old, love to wear them.

Kashmir valley, a natural paradise, full of flowers and maple trees, produces the best hand embroidery work. Artisans draw inspirations from the beautiful nature around. The boteh (flower) or ambia (mango) motifs are the most favored one of the Kashmir designers. The colors used are those of the flowers of the valley. An emphasis on pastel and white shades on a white background is always preferred. Fine embroidery work is done in shades discreetly blending with the background shades. Very seldom one finds a combination of more than two embroidery styles on one object. The stitches are so typical of the region that they are frequently termed as the Kashmiri Stitch. Kashmiri embroidery is remarkable for the skilled execution of a single stitch rather than the elaborate quality of the stitch itself. Chain stitch, satin stitch, the slanted darn stitch, stem, herringbone or sometimes the doori or knot stitches are used.
