JACQUARD

Jacquard owes its name to Joseph Marie Jacquard, a straw hat maker, before becoming a French silk weaver and inventor, who improved on the original punched card design of Jacques de Vaucanson's loom of 1745, to invent the Jacquard loom mechanism in 1804-1805. He died on 7 August 1834 at Oullins. Six years later a statue was erected to him in Lyon, on the site where his 1801 exhibit loom was destroyed. He is said to be inventor of jacquard looms that is graving much importance in today's business.

The Jacquard Loom is a mechanical loom, which utilizes holes punched in pasteboard, each row of which corresponded to one row of the design. Multiple rows of holes were punched on each card and the many cards that comprised the entire design of the textile. These all were strung together in order. Each hole in the card corresponds to a "Bolus" hook. This hole can either be up or down. The hook raises or lowers the harness which carries and guides the warp thread so that the weft will either lie above or below it.

The Jacquard loom was the first machine to use punch cards to control a sequence of operations. This step is considered as one f the important step taken towards the development of jacquard looms in the history. The ability to change the pattern of the loom's weave by simply changing cards was an important step to the development of computer programming.

The term "Jacquard loom" has adopted its name from the "Jacquard head" that adapts to a great many dobby looms such as the "Dornier" brand. It allows the weaving machine to create the intricate patterns. These intricate patterns are often seen in jacquard weaving.

Jacquard looms, whilst relatively common in the textile industry, are not as ubiquitous as dobby looms which are usually faster and much cheaper to operate. Modern jacquard looms are computer controlled and can have thousands of hooks. now the punched cards are remotely used and most of the jacquard looms are computer controlled. As the threading of a jacquard loom is so labor intensive that many looms are threaded only once.

For small loom with only a few thousand warp also, the process of re-threading is cumbersome and took so many days. With the new developments also the jacquard loom has been transformed into power loom that does not involve so much labor intensive processes.

Originally the jacquard machines were mechanical, and the fabric design was punched in pattern cards which were joined together to form a continuous chain. The Jacquards often were small and only independently controlled a relatively few warp ends. On almost all the looms the programmed raising of each warp thread independently of the others. This brings much greater versatility to the weaving process, and offers the highest level of warp yarn control.
