Paisley is a passion of mine, I always have a collection of these shawls.

They range from long crinoline shawls to small squares suitable for little side tables. I buy damaged shawls suitable for cushions and other craft projects.
The shawls come in wool and silk, either woven or printed.

The Shawl was a popular gift brought home from India and the East and when these became a fashion item, mills in Europe began to reproduce them.

"Paisley" is the popular name for all these shawls, but
they were also produced
in Edinburgh and
Norfolk as well as Paisley near Glasgow where they took their
name from.

France loved these shawls too and produced their own patterns. Empress Josephine was a collector of these and had many that they were also popular in the
court of France.

Splendid range of Paisley Shawls in trendy

discerning ones.

They appealed to the mass market of the middle and eventually working classes.

By 1850, Edinburgh could no longer compete with Paisley and stopped
producing shawls. Norwich and France continued to produce very good quality examples.

A combination of events led to the decline of popularity of the shawl in the early 1870's.

Currently featured are richly woven Jamawar Shawls reflecting the timeless designs of Kashmir and graceful, exceptional quality wool shawls with patterns which
culturally echo the many ancient kingdoms of Northern India.

The eventual demise of the fashion meant trouble for the weaving industry of the town, which had kept its hand looms to cope with the enormously complex Paisley designs.

Because there had never been a need to re-equip with more modern power looms, capable of producing simpler cloth much more quickly, Paisley could no longer compete, and the weaving industry gradually died.

A woven shawl, and its pattern, have come to be
named after the
town of Paisley.

But these shawls did not originate in Paisley, nor was Paisley their only place of production in Europe!

Paisley had become pre-eminent in Great Britain by reducing costs through sub–division and specialization of labour.

They appealed to the mass market of the middle and eventually working classes.

unbeaten and have a soothing effect.
